Feature FAIRE Magazine | Issue 6.

Kim Chin worked in the textile industry for 15 years before becoming an independent maker. Here Kim reveals the process of adapting and transitioning to a purpose-led practice after being locked down with her Mum in 2020.

In July 2022, a twelve-page feature reflecting on my textile-art-curatorial practice flux was published in Faire Magazine. Being in-between states felt daunting: I was transitioning from a familiar independent career and lifestyle in North America to one of interdependence and unknown during a global pandemic. This time of exploration was transformational. Through making art and living with Mum during the lockdown, an interrogation of my heritage ensued. I decolonised my gaze through reading, conversations and more art to combat internalised feelings of not belonging. The nuance, struggles and renegotiated relationship of where I was then drew editor Ruth Beaucourt to my story. I am forever grateful for this opportunity to articulate thoughts and feelings in words publicly and see how much I have grown even then. Progress not perfection. V.O Curations are running their first group show consisting of 62 artists currently taking up lease in their not-for-profit endeavours, V.O Studios. The thematic show spans 4 spaces - the gallery, Project Space 2, and two rooms on the 5th floor. Artists employ multiple mediums such as painting, textiles, drawing, sculpture, video, ceramics and fashion. I will be showcasing ‘The Bends’, 2020-21, painting on reclaimed photographs, as renewing past memories and faces into the present - a cathartic way of making room for future dialogues and inquisitions.

Enquiries available directly through the gallery.

Cadenza Tee Play

A handful of Cadenza tees were made available in UK during September’s Open Studio. Based on the original lino-cut artwork called ‘Synchronicity’.

The Cadenza tee was developed as a signature artwork in collaboration with Studio Myke, sold exclusively in the US. A handful of shirts were made available at the V.O Open Studios last month, with the last two available online here. The original lino print artwork “Synchronicity”, 2020 was inspired by duality of origins - the chance meeting of my two parents from different parts of the world then meeting in London’s Hyde Park. It only seemed fitting to try on the newly arrived styles on half of the original inspiration in an impromptu shoot with my mum, and evolved on hand crafted masks fabricated from upcycled materials.

Textiles, Technology + Traditions

It all begins with an idea.

Since returning to London, I have prioritize parts of my life that needed a little nourishment and attention: being surrounded by people who are truly in your corner, learning and unlearning things that better support my values, and creating from a place of peace, acceptance, and authenticity. In a time where many global events are coming to a head - whether it be the COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis, spread of misinformation, or systemic racial inequality of resources and basic human rights - focusing on the immediate areas that were within my orbit has been both unnerving and necessary all at once.

After a consistent year of making, continuing practice and productivity has guided me to my next steps. I have been able to sift through many ideas into more tangible projects that are lining up a lifelong thread of things I’d like explore. Thankful for the friends and family who have helped me resettle in London, I have the intention of inviting new connections, collaboration, and opportunity along the way.

Today an article with the Independent was launched describing my relationship with traditional printmaking methods and technology in order to minimize wasteful methods in any small way possible. Working on this paid partnership with Independent and Samsung helped me define one of the many paths that have brought me back to the skills gained in the fashion and textiles industry. Only this time, with concepts, themes, and methods closer to my personal perspective.
