Saturday School is a learning lab hosted by Migrants in Culture, with the intent to embody, imagine and design for border abolition.

Over the last year, a cohort of 18 migrant organisers have gathered for creative practice to develop practical experiments that support their communities to move towards a world where borders are irrelevant.

Graduation of participants from Saturday School and test workshops of the cohort were presented at a Spring Celebration on March 8 2025. Developed workshops are offered for the following round of Saturday School 2025 participants on November 8 2025.

Stitching Truth to Power | Migrants in Culture | Pelican House

I love not having to go to a shop to buy new material as I hate waste. People are just chucking things, not using them, not repairing. This project meets my needs in all kinds of ways.”

— Ashika, Stitch Social attendee

North London Waste Authority, the new funders of Stitch Social + joined our closing session before Summer break to hear from residents on what participation with upcycling textiles through creativity has had on their motivation, community connection and practical skills.

Stitch Social +

Some exciting news! I'm thrilled to share that Stitch Social is expanding! After a successful year as a Community Champions project, we’re entering a new phase with Stitch Social +, supported by a new additional funder and packed with even more creative potential. The project will run until March 2026, with updates on location changes where applicable.

What’s new?

We’re at our new home, The Playhut in Kilburn Grange Park. Sessions will run weekly on Wednesdays 12-2 pm. Together, we’ll explore the mental health benefits of creativity and connection, while working toward a community exhibition to share what we’ve made.

Don’t want to take part in the workshops but still want to support the project?

Threading Layers of Home x Counterpoint Arts

Like many children of migrants, I have been brought up with lots of love and contradictions – many of which I am still untangling today. What was deemed important by our parents to “succeed” in an idealised British culture came at the cost of distancing us from clearer roots of where we came from.
— Kim Chin

Opening paragraph for the reflection piece “Threading Layers of ‘Home’: reflecting and assembling as a revolutionary act of care”, written for Counterpoint Art’s Blog post December 19, 2024. Themes of community, migration, situated knowledge, memory, art and well-being are explored.

Peer-to-peer cohort 2024 - 2025

NEW PEER-TO-PEER COHORT!

We are thrilled to announce the ten artists who have been selected to participate in this year’s artist support programme, Peer-to-Peer 2024. Amanda Colares Silva, Eileen Perrier, Francesca Telling, JAYKOE, Krystyna & Sabina (Kasia Kuzka and Mateusz Piekarski), Daisy Jones, ESEA unseen (Kim Chin + Sue Man), Rose Nordin, Zish, and Ngo Chun Tse

Peer-to-Peer was developed in conversation with artists in Brent. The programme seeks to address the challenges experienced by many artists in the borough. Scarcity of financial support; little opportunity for peer support; and difficulty gaining visibility. These barriers mean that artists in Brent are often forced to stop practising, or leave the Borough to pursue opportunities.

Peer-to-Peer aims to support artists to grow their practice from within Brent. Offering tailored, meaningful support for artists. The results of which we hope will last beyond the programme itself.

Cadenza Tee Play

A handful of Cadenza tees were made available in UK during September’s Open Studio. Based on the original lino-cut artwork called ‘Synchronicity’.

The Cadenza tee was developed as a signature artwork in collaboration with Studio Myke, sold exclusively in the US. A handful of shirts were made available at the V.O Open Studios last month, with the last two available online here. The original lino print artwork “Synchronicity”, 2020 was inspired by duality of origins - the chance meeting of my two parents from different parts of the world then meeting in London’s Hyde Park. It only seemed fitting to try on the newly arrived styles on half of the original inspiration in an impromptu shoot with my mum, and evolved on hand crafted masks fabricated from upcycled materials.
